I think I had some realistic expectations in terms of complexity and overall design (I wasn't expecting a Paradox-like grand strategy game of course!) so my idea was that this game might be something similar to Diplomacy, a political simulator focused on the issue of Global Warming. The first impact with the game wasn't bad: the interfaceis chaotic and badly implemented, although the amount of very detailed infos about the economics of the (too big) areas the planet is divided into (Africa is just split into Northern and Southern) gave me good hopes about how sophisticated the game engine was. Reality game me a slap in the face at the following step though: no matter how many economical, social and environmental variables the games compute... it's nothing more than a card game at its core. The only thing you can do as a player is assigning 'agents' to certain areas of the world; you can then assign a card to any single agent. This card can be a policy, or a task. The policies are very generic, like "Improve the basic education of the population", or "Make the commercial/industrial/agricultural" side of the local economy grow. After having assigned the cards to every agent you deployed, you are just left at ending the turn and look at the consequences of the policies you adopted through the plethora of economic/social/environmental data. That's it. It's so disappointing. I've never seen such an unbalance between the complexity of the game engine (assuming that all those parameters are computed for real, and not just smoke and mirrors) and the limitations given to the player.. This Game is definatly recommended. It shows you in brutal honesty that there are no easy solutions to global problems. Every action you do can (and most likely will) cause side effects. Dont expect solutions tough, its just a game after all, but one that makes you think a bit. Technically and graphically its allright, works fine for me. The devs keep improving it still with patches and scenarios.. Something about this game just keeps me coming back, trying to do better. Although I think the moral of the story is, mankind is screwed.. Amazing! This game makes you question some of your ways of seeing the world! There is a clear problem with global warming and, probably, what you think will solve it may not do any good whatsoever... Despite being a superb experience, there are some signals of the personal orientation of the developers on the matter, but it doesn't take away from the fun.. While the game does contain some green propaganda and isn't really too realistic, but unofficial patch can easily help with that, and there are some nice scenarios like Dr. Apocalypse or the whole so-called Denial DLC offers a much more realistic pack of scenarios. But even in the "normal" ones you can just enjoy rulling over the whole world, like all totallitarian regimes scaring the populace into submission by some scapegoat and external enemy, even if it has to be "climate change". I add the tag villain protagonist to the whole thing and recommend it. Even when you can be not a villain in many scenarios, some actually require you to be either a villain or well-intentioned extremist. You can be Ras al Ghul or typical Illuminati world governement if you want, as long as you just enforce your rule and force them not to emit too much - killing, forced sterilization, regime change if necessary, one-child policy - all this and more is possible.. Would recomend I if you want a challenage. Needs a lot more work to explain the game concepts to the player. I have read guides and a wiki, and the current state is horribly underexplained. How much does "reduce coal consumption" actually reduce? How much energy does fusion bring? Did you know that nanotech requires advanced drilling AND tensile materials? What are the HDI requirements for the regions before they start complaining? There are dozens of metrics, and only a very vague understanding how how they are connected. Without understanding, you are doomed to fail. Maybe I'll play it again in a year once it gets more detail.. for now it's frustrating.. Fate of the world is a unique and brillient Turn-Based Stratagy game that is tough but fair and leaves players wanting more.. Much more fun than I thought it would be! Excellent time burner since you gotta be thinking and engaged.
